Chroma

What is Chroma?

Chroma is 2D rhythm platforming game in which the players take the role of The Hero, a young boy who is running away from The Darkest Enemy, a menacing entity which is pursuing him for the entire duration of the game. The Hero has to follow the music rhythm in order to change his color in order to match the ones appearing on the screen and collect puzzle pieces that will help him out in his attempt to run away from the Darkest Enemy.

My experience

Chroma represents one of the funniest games that I have worked on, thanks to the team that I worked with, together with the fun we had in making the game itself.

My responsibilities in Chroma were:

  • Game Design: together with the rest of the team I developed the theme, narrative and mechanics of the game.

  • Project Management: manage the team and keep the vision unified and within the scope, together with the creation of the GDD for the game.

  • Audio design: creation of sound effects for the game in order to have them implemented by the programmer.

Developing Chroma has been a great moment to understand what does it mean to work with particular limitations, especially in terms of time. The time that we could dedicate to the project was always stolen by many other tasks that the team was required to do and which had nothing to do with the development of the game. This brought me to think about what was the best way to create a game that could possibly delivery a story and being fun with the minimum amount of assets required.
This is how we decided to go for a platforming running game that could possibly be unique: this how we came up with the idea of adding a rhythm twist to it.

Rewarding the player with puzzle pieces that counted towards the final result of the game really gave us a lot of freedom in terms of level design, being able to iterate on the design process and making the levels more interesting and challenging without having the players feel cheated.
